Turbocharger - how to care for it?

More and more cars are turbocharged. Thanks to them, our car is more ecological, economical and dynamic at the same time. In order to take advantage of these privileges, however, we must remember that as users of cars with a turbocharger, we are obliged to follow certain rules. We, as a user, also have an influence on the durability and failure-free operation of our turbocharger.

What should you remember to enjoy an efficient turbine for as long as possible?

There are many theories about this. Here are some rules to keep in mind:

  1. Regular oil changes in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Its role is to both lubricate and cool the turbocharger. Poor quality or used oil will not cope with the extreme conditions in which the turbocharger will work, among others. And this is a turnover of up to 200 thousand. and more rpm.

  2. Taking care of the proper oil level in the engine, as even a temporary lack of lubrication may damage the turbocharger slide bearings.

  3. Regular replacement of air and oil filters. A frequent cause of failure of turbines that we regenerate is the suction of a foreign body. As a consequence, the turbocharger compressor wheel is damaged and thus loses its properties.

  4. After a long journey and fast driving, do not turn off the engine immediately. Wait for the turbocharger to cool down a little. Sudden cut-off of lubrication, and thus cooling at such a high temperature of the turbocharger, can lead to seizing up of the oil in the lubrication channels. Just a few minutes of engine operation under light load is enough to avoid this.

  5. A frequent failure of turbochargers are also loose injectors or blocked DPFs. After each turbine replacement, we advise our customers to check these components.

Turbocharger failure diagnosis.

A damaged turbine gives various symptoms. It should be disturbing for us, loud work or characteristic whistling, constant or periodic loss of power, increased oil consumption, as well as gray or blue smoke coming from the exhaust pipe.

When a failure occurs, we wonder what to do?

Used turbochargers most often have an unknown history or come from accident cars. New turbines are still relatively expensive, and even they do not guarantee success, because it happens that when replacing, we forget to remove the cause of the failure of the old turbocharger and the same thing happens with the new one. And that can hurt.

The solution is professional regeneration of the turbocharger.

It consists in the replacement of damaged and worn-out parts, correct assembly, balancing and calibration on dedicated equipment. In our case, it is one of the leading manufacturers of equipment for turbocharger regeneration workshops - Turbo Technics. In most cases, it is possible to determine the cause of the failure or incorrect operation of this component.

Knowledge as well as professional and individual approach to the client is our domain.
